  30 Years of Jwaneng Diamonds
     In what was described as “a very special and unique day in the history of mining in Botswana,” Jwaneng Mine commemorated 30 years of diamond production. Speaking at the event, held in Jwaneng last month, President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency, Lieutenant Seretse Khama Ian Khama applauded the Mine for having catapulted Botswana into an economic powerhouse..............

 
   
  Asean Gemstone Outlook
    Wilson Yuen, president of the International Colored Gemstone Association, talked about the ASEAN countries’ market trend at the 3rd International Gem and Jewelry Conference (GIT 2012) in Bangkok. He discussed each country’s strengths from the manufacturing, sales and exportation perspective.”China and India remain the largest consumer markets in terms of sales and
export. Thailand maintains its position as the top supplier. With respects to the competition from Sri Lanka and India, Thailand’s growing economic status could soon disqualify it for tax exemption when exporting gems to the US market,” said Yuen.......................

     American Gem Society CEO Ruth Batson has also been appointed to the role of CEO of AGS Laboratories. AGS announced at the JCK show in June that it had acquired the outstanding shares of American Gem Society Laboratories, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary of the AGS.......................

    First Element (Pty) Ltd has held a tender of rough diamonds, inaugurating the Antwerp Diamond Tender Facility. The ender offered rough diamonds from the Liqhobong Mine in Lesotho. The company did not publish the results of the tender, only calling it a success...............

  Competition may impact Surat
     In India, Surat’s diamond manufacturing sector is facing increased competition from China, putting a dent the city’s status as a leading polishing and cutting hub. A report by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) noted that there are grave concerns now that Surat-based diamond manufacturers are relocating to China, a country which is constantly pushing for direct rough diamond supply deals with producer countries..............

  Eden Rachminov received NCDIA Award
     Eden Rachminov, owner and managing partner of fancy colour diamond manufacturer Rachminov Diamonds 1891, received the first Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA) Achievement Award for Education and Promotion of Natural Color Diamonds at the organization’s recent “Night of Color Diamonds Gala.” The award was presented to Rachminov for his devotion and efforts on behalf of natural colour diamonds, for the variety of colours he promotes and for advancing awareness and knowledge about the field....................

  Hary Winston keeping Luxury Brand for new
    Harry Winston Diamond Corp. has no plans to sell or spin off its watch and jewellery division from its mining division in the next year, though the retail arm will eventually stand on its own, the company’s chief executive said. “In the fullness of
time, it will certainly either become separated or be sold to someone that can do better with it than we would be able to,” Robert Gannicott told investors. “But clearly that time is not now,” he said. “It still requires further investment and it still needs to get through at least another year.”.........

  World's Largest Cut Aquamarine
    The Dom Pedro Aquamarine, the largest single piece of cut aquamarine in the world, is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC USA. The gemstone joins other exceptional gems already
on exhibit in the Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals including the Hope Diamond and the Marie Antoinette earrings. Jane M. Mitchell and Jeffery S. Bland donated the piece. The quality of the original crystal and its size,
exquisite blue-green colour and distinctive cut make it an exceptionally rare gem. “There is so much about the Dom Pedro that is remarkable, and we are able to preserve the story that goes along with it,” said Kirk Johnson, the Sant Director of the
National Museum of Natural History. “The Dom Pedro is enriched by all the people and places that have been a part of its fascinating journey to its home here in the National Gem Collection. We are grateful to Jane Mitchell and Jeffery Bland for their
